, kentucky. that's where it's going to happen. new polls out to talk about. they show that the romney/ryan team is gaining ground where they need it the most, in the swing states. romney is closing the gap in ohio and pulling ahead by a point in virginia. mitt romney is in front in another swing state, colorado. let's get right to cnn's dana ba bash. she's already in kentucky with nap good morning, dana. >> reporter: good morning, soledad. well, paul ryan knows full well the pressure is on him to keep the momentum you just illustrated going. and he's actually been preparing, effectively, i'm told, since the day he was picked by mitt romney. reading, studying as much as he can. he's been doing mock debates with his sparring partner, who is a former solicitor general, the renowned litigator, ted olsen, with hotels from oregon to florida. i spoke to him exclusively, soledad, about his prep and it is pretty clear that this kind of preparation is nothing new for him. telling you what a source i spoke with about how you prepare for hunting. you wash your clothes in unscented detergent, shower in
the romney campaign chose to start this week with that big foreign policy speech. congressman ryan uttered the same words that the obama administration has been weak and libya and syria have been mishandled. here's congressman ryan fakes off on one of the deans of foreign policy for this administration. >> i think a tremendous disadvantage for congressman ryan, as it will be for governor romney when he faces off against the president on foreign affairs. i think joe biden will make sure they don't stray from the truth. in yesterday's speech somewhat unbelievably to me after all the contention about misstatements, governor romney made two significant misstatements again shows a disregard for the facts. one he said, tamron, there was no discussion of terrorism in the 2008 debates. we saw last night on msnbc they played the tape. >> there's tape to prove he wasn't accurate. >> 40 mentions of terrorism in that debate, and he said president obama hasn't signed a single free-trade agreement, when, in fact, he signed three. joe biden won't let him get away with it. going back to domestic policy fo
/biden team you'll get another four years like the last four years with the romney/ryan team, a real recovery with more jobs for everybody. >> now politico is reporting today that ann romney and tagg his son, one of his sons did an intervention to try to save the campaign if you will and let mitt be mitt and get the candidate to talk more about himself, talk more emotionally to give the foreign policy speech. in pushing back against some of the staff. can you help us out on that? what is the -- your perspective about it? >> i saw the story. it's a silly little story. there's no truth to it. we're focused on big things. yesterday the governor gave a speech where he talked about some of the very real foreign policy challenges facing us. he talked about building 15 ships a year so we can build up our navy. he talked about the importance of reforming our foreign assistance and linking it to positive outcomes. he talked about stopping iran's reckless pursuit for a nuclear weapon. these are the issues and the challenges that we're focused on. we're not distracted by some of the nonsense stories tha
can't attack. he has to defend. if it had gone well, he could have attacked ryan and romney. now he has to defend the president. >> well, i disagree completely because here's the problem with that. this mitt romney's the same mitt romney that we've known for the last six or seven months, the same mitt romney that voters very cautious with the last six or seven months. it's not about defending the president, it's about taking the fight to mitt romney making them defend, that fantasy show he put on during the other debate where he made stuff up and didn't know his own tax plan, making them stick to what they've been the last six or seven months. >> this is where i think paul ryan will have pressure on him and where i expect paul ryan to perform very well. i mean, i found obama's debate performance totally lacking in specifics. we still don't know what his tax plan is or his deficit plan or his budget plan. but paul ryan has become the personification for the democrats of all that is callous and cold and evil about the romney campaign. so ryan now has i think an opportunity to not only
think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut something that we know is effective and works and helps our kids prepare for the future, but you're going to continue to give subsidies to big oil? that doesn't make sense. so, i do think that there is a seriousness to this conversation and i think biden is the kind of guy who can bring that right balance to the debate. >> all right, so, one thing in an interview, congressman ryan did talk about his nerves playing into effect for thursday. take a look. >> joe biden's one of the best debaters we've seen in modern politics. he's been doing this for 40 years. he ran for president twice, he's the sitting vice president. it's my first time on the national stage like this, so i'm playing -- >> nervous? >> sure, of course i'm a little nervous. everybody's nervous about something like this. i bet joe biden's a little nervous. >> joe, i want to ask you about this. he will be a formidable opponent as far as knowing the inside baseball
to draw contrasts, not only between the president and mitt romney, but also between paul ryan and mitt romney. he knows a lot about paul ryan on medicare, social security and also i was told, foreign policy. he will try to talk about that. >> it's interesting, john, you talk about the generational divide between these two but unlike the presidential debate where you had a former law professor and former ceo, these are two guys with blue collar backgrounds and have spent a lot of time out there campaigning. how noticeable do you think that's going to be? >> it takes one to know one. these are the two beer drinkers in this race. the president and governor romney, no insult intended, can seem a bit elite, detached sometimes. these are more blue collar guys. they're comfortable in an irish pub, in a vfw post. that's their job on the campaign trail, go out and get the working class voters who could be key especially in some of the idaho in west battleground states. stylistically, even though there's an age difference, they are somewhat alike, these two. and that's what's so interesting. lib
in michigan. mr. obama had a ten point lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. obama, president obama, led by five. now, as for today's pew poll, the obama campaign takes issue with the party make-up of people surveyed, saying it tilts republican compared to september. the romney campaign, on the other hand, says it's pleased with the numbers. joining us now, jim acosta with the romney campaign in newport news, virginia and on the phone, dan lothian with president obama's campaign. jim, you're on the trail with the romney campaign. what's the reaction
happened the middle of our day with ryan, when a pew research poll showed the romney/ryan ticket in the lead. >> everybody says that the polls are skewed one way. >> reporter: a recent poll has come out that shows romney in front. how do you feel about that poll? >> he got a good bump out of the debate. >> reporter: you're saying you believe that poll? >> yeah. >> reporter: the people in this room, it is indeed tempting to now believe these latest numbers. not everyone is ready to believe. >> the pew research poll shows romney in front now. do you think that poll's accurate? >> probably as accurate as any of them out there. >> reporter: you don't think there's a difference? >> no. >> reporter: this woman had one thought she very much wanted to express. >> i think the only poll that's going to count is the one on november 6th. >> reporter: you can argue with what many people here are saying, but you can't argue with that. gary tuchman, cnn, rochester, michigan. >> she's right about that poll. michigan is tightening, you saw from the polling at the top. ohio is tightening too, wher

of the romney/ryan campaign. if ron is able to beat biden, make better arguments on policy, then wow, that's two in a row, and there's more pressure on the president in the next debate. >> okay. about a month to go, little less than a month now. i think we've hit on some of the topics, but what needs to happen, talking about the presidential candidates again, what does the president need to do, what does mitt romney need to do? >> i think number one, they have to be aggressive. their campaigns are playing offense. mitt romney will talk about the economy a lot. he's going to give a foreign policy speech today. overall, it's about the economy. it's making the argument of who can better the economy, because it's ailing. they both agree the economy is ailing. who can fix it and make the arguments better? >> quick answer, does it hurt the president to be in hollywood when, or in california when it doesn't matter as much as virginia does now? or is it okay? >> i think he's got to raise money. but i do think it hurts him a little bit. not a game changer. >> bob cusack, you're a game changer. >> thank y
